If you can’t update your website internally, it’s time to get a new website before 2026

It’s a story we are hearing more and more often. Businesses were charged high prices for websites that they haven’t been able to update in years. To increase your chances of attracting customers from Google or ChatGPT in 2026, you need a website that allows for regular updates and tweaks. We help our clients transition from coded or plugin-heavy platforms to more user-friendly website editors, such as Wix.

Why is it important to update your website regularly?

Your website serves as the primary hub for your business. If your pricing, services, products, or food menus are incorrect, it creates a poor experience for potential customers and sends warning signals to search engines. Many website updates involve only simple text edits or the deletion of sections. You also want your website to reflect your brand.

Google and ChatGPT are scanning the web to give users up-to-date answers to their questions. They’re more likely to recommend a business that discusses its recent work, has recent testimonials, and maintains an active online presence.

You shouldn’t need a website developer to make basic changes

If you’ve fallen into the trap of needing to ask your website developer to remove outdated pages or update text, and they’re trying to charge a large fee, it may be in your best interest to just start building your website on a new platform. Most small and medium-sized businesses have tech-savvy team members. Updating text on drag-and-drop website builders, such as Wix and Squarespace, is similar to updating text in a document. No digging through plugins, files or code.

So why do developers recommend such difficult-to-edit websites?

When developers recommend WordPress or coded sites over builders like Wix or Squarespace, it’s usually because those platforms can handle more advanced custom features. The thing is, most businesses never actually need that level of complexity. For many companies, drag-and-drop builders are not only easier to manage on a day-to-day basis, but also cover everything they realistically need: service pages, blogs, booking forms, and even e-commerce. A custom-coded site can be powerful, but it’s also more difficult to maintain, often requires a developer for changes, and can become overkill if you just want a site that works without extra hassle.

Which platform is best? Wix or Squarespace?

We have already written a separate blog on this topic, but we tend to recommend Wix to most of our clients. Their built-in applications, like appointment booking calendars and lead capture forms, are among the best available. The Squarespace editor is similar, with more limited design options and fewer built-in applications.

What about SEO? Will I be able to rank at the top of Google and in AI search?

Yes, the platform your website is built on is less important than following standard SEO best practices. Our team will structure the copy and meta tags across your website to target what your ideal audience is searching for online and keep image sizes small to help with loading. We also create a desktop, tablet, and mobile-friendly view for each page.

How long does it take to build a new website?

We can usually finish a 10-15 page website rebuild in 3-4 weeks. If we are building a multipage site, we typically design the homepage and one or two service pages for you to review before moving forward with the rest of the site.

What do I need to know to switch to a modern website builder?

Where is your website currently being hosted?

Common website hosts include GoDaddy, HostGator, and Hostinger. When your new site is ready, we’ll point the DNS from the old site to it.

What do you want to carry over from your current website?

Do you want to keep the same pages (services, about, FAQs)? Do you like the general design, just want to freshen it up a little bit?
